  • If you can play the recorder really well, can you transfer that ability directly to a flute or are the whole mechanics and process different? My daughter plays the recorder beautifully(and I mean really beautifully) so i was wondering if I bought her a flute would she be able to be able to just play with the same ease or will it be like learning an entirely different instrument. I appreciate any input, before I purchase the flute. She does want to play the flute but I think she is guessing it will be easy.....

  • No not really! Sorry everything is different! If she wants to play the flute you may want to start her on the fife. These are little mini plastic flutes and are about approximately $8-$10 each. Its kinda mix between recorder and Flute and Flute teachers use them if the Flutes are too big for small hands.

  • The mechanics are very different. A recorder you just blow into and you've got instant sound. Producing sound on a flute is kind of like producing sound by blowing into a bottle, and it's much more complected to find pitches.
However, I would consider buying her a flute anyway because her passion for music WOULD carry over, and she can then play flute as a profession when she grows up (like in a symphony orchestra) or even just in college/high school (however old she is). Playing recorder doesn't do much for you in life. There's not much music written for it outside of the Baroque era.
So I'd say that no, she wouldn't be able to instantly play flute after playing recorder, but you should consider buying her one because she would probably enjoy it just as much and it could get her further in life.

  • I know lots of people have replied this saying "No it's really hard" etc and one's even a flute teacher so it might be wise to listen to that but from personal experience, making the switch between recorder to flute was not very difficult for me.

I played the recorder from Grade 3 till the end of primary school and when I hit Year 7, I wanted to pick up the flute and join the concert band. Admittedly, yes, at first it was rather hard to learn how to blow and get a sound out of the flute but like all instruments, starting out is always tricky.
The fingering of notes between the recorder and the flute are a little different but I suppose you could say the same between a recorder and a clarinet - and those two look more alike than a recorder and a flute. The technique I learned whilst playing a recorder (such as slurring and tonguing articulation etc) helped me play the flute as it's pretty much exactly the same.

I suppose everyone's abilities are different but if your daughter is serious about learning to play the flute, I would say go for it, especially since she plays the recorder so well. It'll be a little tricky and first but it's not astonishingly difficult and once she gets the basics, it is quite enjoyable.

  • Well thats a hard one because when i was in school we played the recorder in music class. Then i decided i wanted to join the band and wanted to play the flute. It did not work out it is very hard to get a sound out of it.

  • no sadly you can't. the recorder is a very simple instrument that you just blow into.

learning the flute would be an entirely new instrument, but if she has learned to read music and listen properly than she will have a heads-up for any instrument she may wish to play

  • No you can't play the flute if you play the recorder. I do suggest letting her play the flute anyway. I absolutley love playing my flute and when she gets into college and high school she can be in the band. She already knows how to read music so she could be a step ahead of the other kids.

She could also play the piccolo (sp?) which is like a miniature flute that plays an octave higher. They are so cute I have always wanted to play one.

Or you could have her try the clarinet or oboe. An oboe sounds more like a flute but is shaped like a clarinet. They are both held more like the recorder but still she will have to learn these from the start.

Just look into all the intruments and let her decide what one she would want to play
